Book Recommendations

Over the past couple years, I’ve been trying to curate a list of nature-themed books. I include several genres here, because each book contributes to a collective portrayal of the “more-than-human”. In contemporary academic circles, this refers to the dynamic of relationships that include a whole set of agents (fungi, flora, fauna, even geology and climatic forces). It’s not a matter of mere “nature” and “society.”

Naturalist writing, for example, illustrates particular ways of observing and interacting with other species. Climate Fiction imagines endless possibilities of how people inhabit specific locations, as dramatic climatic forces actively shape characters’ lives. Environmental journalism and social sciences trace out the historicity of situations that impose themselves on the present. Gardening and permaculture manuals guide ways of engaging with landscapes, plants, insects, and so on…
My proposed categories are quite flexible and in many cases arbitrary. I’ve listed them alphabetically, not by particular preference. If you have any additional book suggestions, let me know in the comment section below.
